People across the web have been asking the same question “which set top box that runs XBMC should I buy for Christmas gifts?” We’re going to briefly overview a few of the Android hardware options that we’ve tested to date. For now XBMC for Android is still in the development stages, so you want to stick with hardware that’s confirmed to work, whereas in the future once XBMC for Android is more stable, it’ll work better on a much wider variety of devices.
BEST ANDROID TV SET TOP BOXES FOR XBMC, JUST IN TIME FOR THE HOLIDAYS
1. Pivos XIOS DS
Where to Buy: Authorized DealersIt resembles the Apple TV except it’s in white, and runs versions of XBMC for both Linux and Android. Most people have opted to use the much more stable Linux version of XBMC until the Android version is closer to final release, this is something that is pretty much exclusive to the Pivos XIOS DS. This device is being used by the XBMC Foundation as a base for their Android software development, which means support on it will be great. This would probably be your best bet this Christmas, until the XBMC version for Android is further in development.
2. Jynxbox Android HD
Where to Buy: Jynxbox.meSince it’s actually manufactured by Geniatech, the same Chinese factory as the Pivos, it runs XBMC for Android pretty much the same as the Pivos will, with hardware specifications very close to equal, it won’t run XBMC for Linux anytime soon however. It’s a sleek black device that looks very similar to the Apple TV. Right now you’ll probably want to run XBMC for Android Nightlies with External Player on this device, until the Android version is more advanced.
3. MK802 or MK808 Android TV Stick
Where to Buy: Amazon or eBay
It looks like a USB Memory Key, but it’s actually a mini computer with an HDMI output at the end that connects directly to your television similar to how its USB counterpart would plug into a computer, but with an HDMI connector at the end instead. These devices are manufactured by many different Chinese factories including Rikomagic and all offer very similar specifications, make sure it runs at minimum Android 4.0 however. You’ll need to seperately purchase Wireless Mouse with USB Dongle seperately in order to control the device.
4. G-Box Midnight
Where to Buy: Amazon
Another device that seems to be gaining popularity around the XBMC community. It’s pretty much the same as any other decent quality Android TV set top box. As with any other device running Android operating system, you’ll be using the XBMC for Android Nightly with External Player until the official XBMC hardware decoding is released.
5. Sumvision Cyclone Nano Slim Plus
Where to Buy: Amazon UK
This device is often referred to as the Pivos clone, and for good reason. It’s also made at Geniatech, the exact same Chinese factory as the Pivos. It is distributed primarily in Europe however, where there currently a lack of availability for other Android TV device options. It won’t for sure run XBMC-Linux but it will run the same XBMC for Android Nightly with External Player that we’re recommending for other Android devices.
Congratulations! Now you can actually buy your friends and loved ones something they’ll enjoy and use and not just give away as a gift to someone else they know.
